7.6.3 Variations and Issues

A general scheme to enhance the efficiency of frequent pattern is perfect extension pruning (Sect. 7.6.3.1). Since usually many frequent patterns can be found in a data set, reducing the output is an important task (Sect. 7.6.3.2). The same holds for association rules (Sect. 7.6.3.3), which are usually filtered based on evaluation measures. Data types other than item sets need special methods to eliminate redundant search (Sect. 7.6.3.4). With this last section we go, in one special instance, beyond the usual scope of this book, because we consider data that has a more complex structure than a record in a data set. The idea is to convey at least some idea of how data analysis of such data can look like, while we cannot provide a comprehensive treatment of all more complex data types.
